Tales from the Cabbage Patch

It started in science class, when the third grade students received cabbage plants that they would have to grow. It ended in writing class, as students wrote creative fictions about the futures of their beloved plants. These are their stories collected for your enjoyment in “Tales from the Cabbage Patch.”
Dedicated to Mr. Castano
for sharing his love of writing with us.

The Magic Cabbage Seed

The Magic Cabbage Seed
Aimee

Once upon a time, my teacher gave me a magic seed that grew into a cabbage plant. I put the seed in the ground and I watered the seed. The next day, it grew so big it was the size of the Empire State Building! My cabbage plant grew over 10,000 pounds. It was a really, really pretty color. It was lime green. I named my cabbage plant Crinkles because its leaves always crinkled up. I entered it in a Cabbage Plant Contest. Whoever wins gets $1,000. I painted it rainbow colors and put sparkles on it, so it would look pretty. I won the contest and $1,000.

Madilen and the Cabbage Growing Contest

Madilen and
the Cabbage Growing Contest
Morgan

Hi! I am Morgan, and I wrote this story. I am the narrator and author. I should probably start the story…

There once lived a girl named Madilen. Madilen loved to garden and enter contests. Madilen wanted to enter, so she asked her mom if she could enter the contest. Her mom said, “Yes, you may enter the contest.” So Madilen started to grow her cabbage. A few months went by and the cabbage grew. Boy, did it grow! It grew so big, it could be a house. She tried to weigh it, but it was so big Madilen could not weigh it. So she just took a photo of the cabbage. Then she sent it to the post office.
Madilen went to the contest. She signed in, so the judges knew she was there. Then she went to her seat and ran into the lady that worked there. Madilen asked the lady how many people were there. The lady said, “About five million people.”
Madilen went to her seat. They announced fourth and third place. It was not Madilen. She was very sad. They announced second and first. Madilen did not get second place. Madilen got first place and the first place prize of one hundred million dollars. Madilen said, “REALLY? REALLY? Did I really get first place?!” Madilen really won, and she ran home and handed her mother the one hundred million dollars.
Her mom said, “What’s this Madilen?”
Madilen said, “I won first place and I got one hundred million dollars!”
Her mom said, “Let’s celebrate with a fresh gourmet lunch with the neighborhood, family, and friends!”

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Christina. She went to St. Joseph School and her teacher gave her class magic cabbage seeds. She went home and told her mom. “Mom my teacher gave the whole class magic cabbage seeds,” said Christina.
“Oh that’s great Christina! Go put the plant on the living room windowsill where the sun is,” said her mom. “Dad will be so proud of me,” thought Christina.
The next day, Christina went to school and talked to her friends, Amber and Gabs. Christina’s cabbage grew big; bigger than Gabs or Amber’s plant. The reason why it got so big was that it had water, sunlight, and fresh soil. Then Christina’s dad came home and said, “Christina, that’s a beautiful cabbage. I’m so proud of you.”
“Oh, thanks dad. I got it from you,” said Christina.
“Well, it’s time to do homework Christina,” mom interrupted.
            “Okay,” said Christina.
“Now, it’s time to go to bed Christina,” said mom.
“Goodnight, Mom! Goodnight, Dad! Love you!” Christina said.
Then when Christina was asleep her cabbage hit the ceiling and woke Christina up. She called her parents and then they rolled it into the garden, and went back to sleep.
When they woke up the next day, the cabbage had grown super big. They decided to climb it, and heard a voice…”Welcome to the Cabbage Kingdom,” said the Cabbage King.
“You are the Cabbage King? The famous one?” asked Christina.
“Yes I am,” said the Cabbage King. “And here are my kids: Green, Cabb, and last but not least, Abb.” Well, that is a great family you have there Mr. Cabbage King,” said Christina and her parents.
“Thank you! You also have a nice family too,” said Mr. Cabbage King.
“Well, we have to go. Christina has school and I have work,” said dad. “We will see you next time we grow a cabbage,” dad said.
“Goodbye,” said Christina and her parents.
“Goodbye,” said the Cabbage King and his three kids.

Cabbage Ball

Cabbage Ball
Nayan

I had a dream of playing with my friends. We were playing basketball. I wanted to be the next champion. It felt weird. The ball was green and it didn’t feel like a ball. The ball could not bounce, and it was smaller than an average basketball.
We appeared on a big screen in Tokyo. There were five of us holding a cabbage. I wondered what I was going to do next. Finally, I am struck on the head with a cabbage. A team member yelled, “Fore.”
            “This isn’t golf,” I said.
We had so much fun playing even though the ball was a cabbage. Suddenly, I woke up and realized it was all a dream. I began to laugh so loud, my parents ran into my room. I told them my dream and went back to sleep.

My Cabbage Story

When I get my sapling, the first thing I will do is plant it. I shouldn’t give it too much water, just enough to make it grow. I will mix it with fertilizer to make it grow big and healthy.
It will take a few months to grow, but it will be worth it. Once it’s done growing, I’ll cut it off and weigh it so I can present it at the contest. I hope I win, but good luck to everyone else.

The Earth, the Cabbage World, and the Tinderbox

The Earth, the Cabbage World,
and the Tinderbox
Duncan

Thirty years ago, my mother – who was eleven years old – got a cabbage plant from her teacher. When she got home, she put it in a better pot. When it got big enough, mom moved it to the garden.
One day they decided to eat it. So mom went out to the garden. When she got out to the garden, she pulled and PULLED, but no result. Exactly one second later, the ground began to rock and rock. Suddenly the Earth was a giant cabbage. Mom took out a tinderbox and set a fire. Then everything was back to normal.
Mom made cabbage soup, bread, butter, and other good things. They all had it for supper and enjoyed themselves.

The Eating Plant

Chapter 1
Once upon a time, Jacob and Chris were jealous because Nate M. got a plant. They went in a garden to plant it. They tried to make it grow and grow, but it didn’t work…or did it?

Chapter 2
That night, an old man came by. He littered in the garden. What he littered was a growing potion. The plant grew really tall the next morning. Jacob and Chris checked the plant. Harrison, the mailman, came by. The plant did something.

Chapter 3
The plant…ATE HIM! The two boys’ eyes were as big as their faces! Jacob went in his house. They both knew what to do. Jacob grabbed the ax and went plant hunting. Strangely, the plant grew legs and ran off.

Chapter 4
Chris and Jacob found the plant. It was as big as an adult. Then, it was in a mall. Chris tried chopping it, but the plant was too fast. So Chris and Jacob used a combo. Chris jumped on Jacob’s shoulders and with the ax, chopped the plant in half. They saved Harrison, and they all gave a mighty hi-five!

One day I got a cabbage plant. It died one day. I got so mad that I threw it in the trash. The next day it got so big that it covered my house. My dad had to cut his way out of the house. Then, he had to cut every piece of the cabbage plant.

My cabbage plant is 20,000 miles. It is so big, it is bigger than a house. A million people could see it in America. It is so big, it went into Canada. They could build a playground.

If I had a cabbage patch plant and it got so big, I would put it in the park. If it got too big for the park, I would sell it at a fair. I would be so happy if it won a prize for being the biggest plant.

My Too Big Cabbage Plant!!!

My Too Big Cabbage Plant!!!
Gabby

One day my teacher got the whole class cabbage plants. We got to take them home that day and take care of them. Then my cabbage plant got REALLY big. It got so big, because I kept watering and watering it. Then, BOOM! It was as big as my house. I took a picture of it, and then I weighed it. It weighed 2,000 pounds!
It was thirty feet and ten inches. That’s really tall! The next day, the teacher told us that if it weighed a lot and was really tall you could enter your cabbage in a contest. Then I thought I should enter mine in. I did. Then two people were against me, and they said the winner. Guess what? They called my name! I was so happy that I won. Then with the cabbage plant, I made soup that lasted the rest of my life.

The Cabbage That Keeps Growing

If my cabbage plant got too big, I would put it outside in a bigger pot. As a young cabbage plant, the color was light green with a few leaves. But now, after a few days, it is huge. It is almost eight feet tall and the leaves are six feet! It turned light green and yellow. It almost has one hundred leaves, and it is taking over my house and backyard. I can’t even move it, because it weighs 8,000 pounds. Now it is my fault because I watered it every day. But the good news is I can enter it in a contest and see if it will win. So then, they can take it to the Topsfield Fair. But after a few weeks, I got second place, but I’m happy it is gone.

If my cabbage got too big, I would be so surprised. It got big because, I took really good care of my cabbage plant. I watered it, and I gave it the best soil in the world! A few months later, it grew so fat and tall. It was fatter and taller than me! I was so surprised that it got so big!

My teacher gave me a little cabbage plant. I will keep my cabbage indoors in the sun for six to eight weeks. The cabbage plant will grow in the little pot. It will get big and I will put the plant in my garden on my balcony. Finally my huge cabbage will weigh 2,000 pounds. It is time for the contest, and I will beat all the other contestants.

One time I got a cabbage plant, and I watered it every day. It grew very big – even bigger than my house. I couldn’t see outside, because it was blocking my windows, and I didn’t know what to do because it was too heavy to move. So I started to eat it, but it is too much to eat. So I got some people to help. Once it was gone, I grew more cabbage and watered them too much. They grew big too. I sell them for money, and keep doing it again and again.

Cabbage for the Whole Town

Cabbage for the Whole Town
Jacob

One day there was a robbery at the bank and the store in the town. So the town had no food or money. Everyone was poor. The next day, a little boy found a cabbage seed and planted it. He hoped and hoped it would grow. The day after he planted it, he went outside and the leaves were growing out of the plant. He watered the plant. The cabbage head came out a day later. The cabbage grew to twenty-five feet, and the little boy shared the cabbage with the city. The little boy and the people in the city all made food out of the giant cabbage. They caught the villains, and they got their money back. The people all thanked the little boy for sharing his cabbage. Then, the town and the little boy all worked together to make their own farm for the city. They made a trap so no one could steal their money.

Once upon a time, there was a kid named Kevin. He was in the third grade. One day his teacher said that they were going to have a cabbage plant contest. Kevin was so excited, when they gave out the plants. After school, he ran home. He watered it and put it in sunlight. The next day was Saturday. Kevin went to go look at his plant. It was growing and growing. He was so happy. He watered it even more. Then the next day, Kevin went to go water his cabbage. When he was done, it was very, very big. Then he watered it even more. It was so big that he didn’t know how to bring the cabbage to school. Then Kevin took his dad’s truck, and they carried the cabbage in the truck. Then when Kevin went to school, they announced the winner. It was Kevin! He was so happy. When school was over, he went home. He told his mom. He was excited. After, he did not know what to do with it. Kevin’s mom made soup out of it and brought it to the poor.

Once upon a time, I had a cabbage. It was named Franklin. I got it when I was eight. Once I got it, it was really small. I brought it home. I said to myself, “How is my cabbage going to grow so big?” The next day it grew and grew, but it wasn’t that big. It kept growing until the next month. It was so big; I didn’t know what to do with it. I decided to keep on growing it. It was a year later, and it was so, so, so big. My family and I ate it for dinner.

My cabbage plant is very big. It is as big as a yoga ball. That is big; almost too big! If it’s big then my mom will have to make soup out of it. Before she makes soup, we need to find out if it’s the winning prize. My cabbage plant weighs fifty pounds. Its width is one foot. It’s very big because I put it in the sun and watered it every day.

I put the cabbage plant in the pot with soil. I water it every three days. When it is sunny, I take it outside. Now my plant grows every day. If my cabbage becomes bigger, I will ask my mother to cut it into pieces, so she can make a salad for diner. I will make a stand to sell the rest. I decide to plant a cabbage every year.

My cabbage plant grew as big as an apartment building and as long as a train. It got so big that it did not fit in my backyard, because I watered it so much. It weighed 222 pounds. My mom made soup with it, and my Grandpa ate it all. Before they ate it, I rinsed it off with water. I had to enter it in a contest, because it got too big.
When I went to the contest, they announced Bethany the third place winner. She won 200 dollars. Harrison came in second place. He won 500 dollars. Then they yelled out Cailey. I won the 1,000 dollars!!! It was so exciting!!! I grew more and more cabbage plants, and everyone wanted to buy them. I got so rich, that I bought a farm and I only grew cabbage plants. There were tons of patches that were filled with cabbage plants. There were cabbage plants all over the farm. All the animals that were at the farm loved cabbage so all the animals had cabbage for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That’s how much they loved cabbage.

It weighed 106 pounds. It was so heavy I had to call my dad, so we could put it in a wagon to move it in the garden. I kept taking care of it by giving it plenty of water and sun.
My cabbage plant was as tall as a six foot man. My dad was very impressed. He said, “WOW, son! I hope you win! What is the prize for winning?”
“I would win $1,000,” I told him.
And I did win!

One day my teacher gave us some cabbage. Mine was a small cabbage. When I got home, there was a fairy at my door. It gave me magical fairy dust. I was so happy. I put it on my plant. It kept on growing. We took it to the contest. I won. I spent the money on an iPhone, and the rest of it was for college.
